IIDANY | Sustainable Quilt Auction

The auction took place last night and by all accounts it was a huge success. The venue was sold out, again, and the vibe was very festive. All the teams outdid themselves and I can only imagine what will be dreamed up next year. As a little background the Sustainable Quilt Auction was formed 6 years ago as a way for the architecture + design community in New York to get together, much like traditional quilting bees, and explore their creativity in ways they don’t do usually get a chance to do 9-5. The house rules state that the quilts must be queen size or better and made from discontinued fabric from our industry, thus re-purposing what would have ended up in a land fill. Below are images of all the quilts. In advance, please excuse my poor photography.

Much thanks to The Open House Gallery for a wonderful venue, and also to Abigail, Suzette, Miguel and Brian without whom this never would have happened.

IIDA Pioneer Series

Pioneering Design Lecture Series

February 16, 2011

On March 29, 2011, IIDA NY will kick off the 13th annual Pioneering Design Lecture Series at the 92nd Street Y Tribeca in New York City. Cocktails begin at 6:00pm, followed by a panel discussion and reception. Tickets are $50 in advance, and can be purchased online, $60 at the door in limited quantity.

This year’s first speaker is Todd Bracher; recently appointed Creative Director ofGeorg Jensen. Prior to joining George Jensen, Bracher spent 10 years in Europe serving as Senior Designer for Tom Dixon in London and as acting Professor of Design at L’ESAD in Reims, France. He designed furniture pieces for Zanotta in Milan and for Fritz Hansen in Copenhagen. In 2008 The NY Daily News named Todd “America’s Next Great Designer” and the ICFF named him their Best New Designer.

The second lecture on May 17th, celebrates the friendship and collaboration betweenPatrizia Moroso and Patrizia Urquiola. Patrizia Moroso is the Art Director of Moroso S.p.a., a family business known as a leading international design brand of furniture for public and private settings. She considers herself a ‘talent scout’ and has spent the past 25 years commissioning unconventional pieces from Rod Arad, Tord Boontje, Doshi Levien and others; always experimenting with both hand crafting and the newest technologies. Moroso’s pieces can be found at MoMA, the Palais de Tokyo and Le Grand Palais in Paris. Patrizia Urquiola was born in Orviedo, Spain and now lives and works in Milan. After practicing design with Vico Magistretti and Piero Lissoni she opened her own studio in 2001 known for product design, architecture, installations and concept creation. Her client list includes: Valentino, Hermes, B&B Italia, Flos, Foscarini, Knoll, Rosenthal, Swarovski, the Mandarin Oriental, and the Orviedo Opera. Both lectures are accredited for IIDA and AIA Continuing Education Units.
