ABOUT THE EXHIBITION…..

“The stark iconography of urban architecture takes on palpable sensuality in the distinguished textile artist Marilyn Henrion’s new “Soft City” series, which presents a magical mystery tour of familiar thoroughfares.”* In these works, the artist, a native New Yorker, reveals the soft side of New York,  with unexpected visual treats lurking around every corner. Once Gotham’s hard unyielding surfaces are peeled back, the beautiful and complex patina of each facade is illuminated. Henrion’s abstract works have always been informed by the urban architecture of her surroundings.  In Soft City, the artist’s strong connection to the images of  her Soho neighborhood can be fully appreciated.

The mixed media works featured in Henrion’s  solo exhibition represent a fusion of past and present. Ancient needlework techniques are combined  with digitally manipulated photography and inkjet printing  to create works of art that reflect contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. The presence of the hand stitching both animates the surfaces and, at the same time, softens  and humanizes the urban geometry by the irregular qualities of texture  inherent in the materials and construction techniques.

A graduate of Cooper Union, Marilyn Henrion is included in the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art in Washington, DC.  Her award winning artworks have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. They are in major museum, corporate and private collections, including the Museum of Arts & Design in New York, the U.S. Embassy in Pnom Penh, Cambodia, SAS Institute,  Cary, NC, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA., among others. They have also been featured in numerous publications including “Women Designers in the U.S.- 1900-2000, published by Yale University Press. Among the grants Henrion has received was one awarded by the Artslink Partnership, devoted to fostering excellence in the arts between the U.S. and countries of the former Soviet Union. In 2005, she was awarded a fellowship by the New York Foundation for the Arts. This is her 19th solo exhibition.
